How long will it take for me to learn to Salsa?

It is important to have a realistic expectation of the process required to learn to dance Salsa. First, I would like to say that you will NOT be able to salsa after one class. Why? There are may moving parts to dancing with a partner. You have to learn the steps, timing, combinations, and how to lead or follow and how to listen to the music. Yes! You have to learn what instrument you are dancing to.  If you really want to DANCE and not fumble through steps then my advice would be to commit yourself to at least 8 classes. You will also have to commit to memorizing the steps. This means practicing on your own time enough to know when your instructor says get on your 1 you know which position your foot should be in and where your body weight should be transferred. Once you have your steps memorized everything else seems to fall into place and you will have much more confidence on the dancefloor.

What are Shines and WHY do I need to learn them?

Shines are a series of steps danced by one person (solo) typically to practice the basic steps, show off during a break in a song or when partners lose connection and wish to remain on time. They make use of the basic steps and fundamentals to aid in the development of timing, body movement and weight transfer in relation to the rhythm of the music. They are practical in the studio and on the dance floor. As you learn and expose yourself to the social scene of Latin dancing you will realize the prestige and excitement associated with great shines among experienced dancers. Most importantly, the better your shines are the more confidence you will have, your technique will improve exponentially in comparison to those who only take partner work classes.
